Homemade Edible Gift: Cookie Mix

Usually I’m pretty on top of holiday shopping and try to start early in the season so it’s not stressful. This year, I was not on top of it – last week I suddenly realized that there were only 2 weeks left to Christmas and I had barely bought any presents! I scrambled to get things together and actually got the majority of my shopping done (I am so thankful for online shopping!).

For friends I like to make simple homemade gifts like this cookie mix. Mixes are fun because you can throw together cookies when a craving strikes, and with a homemade version you avoid preservatives and other unappealing ingredients. It’s so easy to pour all the ingredients for cookies into a jar (and you probably already have them in your kitchen) and then you can dress it up with a ribbon and label for a sweet present.

Recipe:

Homemade Cookie Mix

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3⁄4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3⁄4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1⁄2 cups chocolate chips or M&Ms
  •  3⁄4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1⁄2 cup granulated sugar

Combine flour, baking soda and salt and pour into a one-quart jar. Layer remaining ingredients in order listed above, pressing down firmly after each layer. Seal jar, decorate and attach directions (listed below).

Directions: Preheat oven to 375°F. Beat 3⁄4 cup softened butter, 1 large egg and 3⁄4 teaspoon va- nilla extract in large bowl. Add cookie mix and beat until combined. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.
